What is vernacular jazz dance?

Vernacular dances are part of “everyday” culture within a particular community. They are sometimes referred to as “street dances.” The term Vernacular Jazz Dance is usually used to refer to a variety of dances that have their roots in African American Jazz Dances including partnered dances like Lindy Hop and Charleston and SOLO dances like Charleston, Black Bottom, Tap, Cakewalk, etc. Each dance has its own characteristics and history, but no matter what, individuality and rhythm are important features of vernacular jazz dance.
